shared metadata is not working properly!

Description

I am using shared metadata using _metadata.yml for one directory in a website, and it's causing issues in directories outside that directory.

In _quarto.yml, I have grid as this:

format:
  html:
    grid:
      sidebar-width: 900px
      body-width: 2400px
      margin-width: 900px

and in publications/_metadata.yml, I have this:

grid:
 sidebar-width: 0px
 body-width: 2400px
 margin-width: 900px

Now the issue is, when I preview the site locally, main site follows the _quarto.yml and when I open publications page one time then even homepage (which should follow _quarto.yml grid) starts following metadata of publications directory! And in a site hosted on GitHub hosted, it directly starts following metadata of publications instead of _quarto.yml

I have not opened the issue because I do not know if it's a bug, or I am using it in a wrong way!

For now, it's hard to say, because it's not very clear what we need to do in order to reproduce.
You did not shared any "working example" and command line to show the issue.

Assuming you are using quarto preview publications/whatever.qmd, Quarto should not use grid if it isn't in _quarto.yml even in "incremental rendering".
Could you share what you do exactly?

grid is a project level option which should only be set in _quarto.yml.

Another idea:

Those configurations will have impact on the Stylesheet produce in latest 1.5, there is still a bug where HTML pages in a website can't have their own specific style. (this is because only one CSS file was produced from bootstrap configuration with Quarto's theming layer system.

I bet that the fix we did in 1.6.7 pre-release could help. The fix was to make sure each page with custom stylesheet configuration will use its own specific CSS.

It may not apply to grid but I figured I shared this here, as it was a very annoying issue. Best to know it is fixed, especially if it does work :)

Worth looking/testing into the codebase for "grid" layout as the new fix allowing different SCSS configurations might be the missing piece needed to "expand" the grid layout beyond project-level.

yes if you want. Our doc currently only shows an exemple of how to configure this at project level, but we do document the option as being a format option in our reference page. it was really a bug that it did not work.

I don't think adding an example of how to do this per-page is something we want to push. This seems to be quite specific customisation - I believe this option has been designed to change the grid projet-wide which is the more common use case. But it works per-page too, like other option like themes.

Probably your idea is to show that this config works for a single document html too.

Anyhow, if you have improvement in mind, like wording or else, open a PR in quarto-web with proposed changed and the team will review.

I was thinking of removing the _quarto.yml from the two code example mostly. And tweak a little bit the sentence above which implies it only works at project level. The following sections does not highlight the _quarto.yml for instance which might confuse users.
I'll make a small PR to the pre-release branch.

@shravanngoswamii You should now be able to use grid at any level starting with Quarto CLI 1.6.7. (It has been confirmed it works)
