What's new in JSesh 7.6.1

  • Fix a "bug" : on some recent screens, the "Edit" menu was too large
  • Fix visual bug on high-resolution display for Mac
  • Fix bug for Turkish locale
  • added texts : Amduat from Thutmosis III's tomb (Thanks to Jean-Yves Barré and his students)
  • added texts : Youth of Thutmosis III (J-Y Barré)
  • added texts : Papyrus Chester Beatty IV (not proofread yet)

About the signs from J-Y Barré's texts

There are many sign variants included in Jean-Yves Barré's texts.
You might have noticed that I'm a bit conservative as far as sign list extension go.
Most of those signs are perfectly legitimate, but I'd rather take some time before adding them.
The signs are included in the text library.
You can set the folder texts/KV34/Complements-KV34 as Hieroglyphic folder in JSesh preferences to display them.

JSesh 7.5.5 contains a number of improved features :

  • the search system has been improved, and is much faster now
  • a system to add new line numbers efficiently ;
  • export in Unicode format of the hieroglyphic text (when possible)
  • support for the new U+A7BD support of yod
  • at least, "enclosure" signs are drawn correctly
  • moved to Java9, as Java8 support is going away...
Bug fixes
  • new files, when saved, will be correctly understood as ending with a ".gly" suffix.
  • fixes to the group editor : rotation and scaling where very difficult to use.

Improved search possibilities:

  • search in non-hieroglyphic text is available ;
  • "wildcard" searches
  • can search for variants of a sign.

The search functions are expected to evolve later:

  • a more powerful search, based on "regular expressions", will be available for power users
  • the variant signs management will be improved (it's currently a bit raw).

Note that sign variant information is taken from the current data in JSesh. As such, it's still very partial.

JSesh 7.3.2

Release 7.3.2 is mainly a bug fix.
JSesh has a function which allows it to store the MDC data in a picture (for EMF and PDF format). This allows one to paste back from pictures from word processors - if the said word processor are well behaved and don't modify the pictures. Mainly, that's OpenOffice for EMF pictures, and Mellel for PDF.

This function had been broken in the previous release. This is fixed.

Somehow a small bug fix for 7.2. It should be a bit more consistent regarding copy/paste size. The main feature,if you have difficulties with copy/paste and word using Windows, is that EMF copy/paste will be now marginless, which is better when mixing glyphs with texts.

Besides, the default embedded format for RTF graphics is now EMF. It might suffice to solve many problems.

JSesh 7.2.0

JSesh 7.2.0 is out !

It adds a new (and long awaited) function : search in texts. You can search
for a sequence of glyphs or for a particular quadrant.

This release of JSesh 7.2 is dedicated to the memory of Vincent Euverte.

What's new:

  • search function - both in the current text and in a whole folder. If you search on your account it
will look at all your "gly" files !
  • lots of sign values added (from Leitz, Quellentexte zur ägyptischen Religion)
  • small in the sign list
  • Major clean-up of the texts included with JSesh. I have given them better names,
and added a (very) short notice to each of them. Some of those texts were typed long time ago, for tksesh
or even for HieroTeX (around 1996 or 1997 for the earliests - blimey, I'm old).
  • fixed the C303 sign, which was wrong (it's Neith breastfeeding two crocodiles,
    they were mistaken as arms).
  • add cursor in empty texts - its absence tended to disturb users.
  • triple-click will now select the current line
  • Export function now work even if no text is selected. They will select the
current page in most cases, except for PDF quick export, which will export the current line.
  • fix for screens with very high resolution. Swing, the graphical system
used by JSesh, is a bit old and doesn't perform well with very high resolution
screens. Basically, the fonts and icons used to be way too small. Now, you will
have normal fonts (at the cost of the pretty, Mac looking look and feel
JSesh had. The library I used for that is no longer maintained). You will also
be able to choose the size of your icons.
  • other bug fixes, for instance for units.

Please, regarding sign values: note that they are provided as a small help,
mainly for finding the signs. Serious documentation about the sign requires,
for instance, to distinguish usual values from extremely unusual ones. I don't
have the time to do this systematically, and, when I do, I usually write a
detailled rubric which goes in the sign description.
