Mentorship Program Call for Participation Fall 2020
OpenHPC was formed with the motivation to more efficiently build, test, deliver and configure integrated HPC software components and tools. Launched initially in November 2015, and formalized as a collaborative Linux Foundation project in June 2016, OpenHPC currently has over 35 members from academia, research labs, and industry. To date, the OpenHPC software stack aggregates a variety of software components ranging from administrative tools like bare-metal provisioning and resource management to end-user development libraries that span a range of scientific/numerical uses. OpenHPC adopts a familiar package repository delivery model and provides builds for multiple Linux distributions and architectures.

OpenHPC is currently accepting applications for a new mentorship program that aims to give students practical experience contributing to an open-source project and an opportunity to work with volunteers from the project’s Technical Steering Committee (TSC). This initial program will occur during the Fall of 2020 with future versions expected to occur during the summer. Potential student project ideas for the Fall 2020 variant are highlighted as follows:
- create end-to-end installation recipe for standing up an OpenHPC cluster using cloud-based resources
- architect, document, and test add-on services for an OpenHPC cluster, e.g.
- enabling Jupyter notebooks and resource manager integration
- enabling OpenOnDemand
- integrating with LDAP authentication
- high availability support with corosync/pacemaker
- architect a historical performance testing database with OpenHPC’s existing testing harness
- document and test enabling one more machine-learning frameworks within an OpenHPC cluster
- develop and document a high-availability (HA) cluster configuration
- other topics of relevance to the community project effort
- Schedule: September 14, 2020 - December 14, 2020
- Eligibility: undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at an accredited academic institution

- Stipend: $4000 (USD) payable in two installments. The first installment of $2000 will be made in October 2020. The second installment will be made near the end of the program in December 2020 and both payments are contingent on making successful project progress as determined by project mentors. Participants are expected to complete a final presentation highlighting project results to TSC mentors at the end of the program.
- Level of effort: selected mentees are expected to meet with OpenHPC mentors remotely on a weekly basis and contribute at least 10 hours per week on average
- Submission elements: interested applicants are invited to submit the following in support of their application:
- recent resume or CV
- 1-page personal statement highlighting your background, Linux experience, interest in the OpenHPC community, and desired project(s). You are free to choose from the project ideas outlined above or to propose alternatives.
- a copy of official University transcript that includes major and current GPA
