The non-buffered writer is now deprecated. Also the amount of compression achieved and the CPU overhead is much better when using the buffered writer.

github.com/klauspost/compress/flate is a drop-in replacement for compress/flate and it appears to be considerably faster, and to compress as well or better at each compression level
