  1. test: refactors variable and assertions

    - changes var to const/let
    - changes assert.equal to assert.strictEqual
    
    **Note: `process.on('exit')` wasn't able to change the handler to
    `common.mustCall` because `common.mustCall` actually uses
    `process.on('exit')` internally**
