About

Etho-Boost is a crowdfunding platform that runs on the Ethereum blockchain. It the capstone/cross-pollination project built by 6 students at Turing School of Software and Design in their 4th and final module. Powered by smart-contracts deployed to the Ethereum Virtual Machine(EVM), Etho-Boost gives donors the power to review and approve withdrawal requests from the Boosters(campaigns) they have donated to, ensuring that donations are used as advertised.

Why?

Trust

The untrustworthy nature of crowdfunding websites deters potential donors because there is no accountability. Fundraisers are not expected to publish honest, detailed information about where a donated dollar goes, and EthoBoost demands more transparency. EthoBoost gives donors the power to review and approve requests to withdraw funds before a manager can complete a withdrawal, ensuring that donations are used as advertised. Fund managers set a minimum value that a donor must contribute in order to have approval rights for that fund. A fund manager must create a request to withdraw donations, and the request must be approved by over 50% of ‘approvers’ for the campaign.

Borderless and Bankless

Today’s financial system makes it extremely difficult to send and receive money across borders, forcing crowdfunding platforms to restrict transactions by imposing fees on international donations. EthoBoost is built on the Ethereum blockchain, granting donors and fundraisers the freedom to exchange funds without the constraints of a traditional bank account from any specific country.

Transactions(Fees and time)

Crowdfunding platforms generally charge a 5% transaction fee, and transactions take at least 3-5 business days to complete. Facilitated by the Ethereum blockchain, EthoBoosts transactions cost just a few cents and finalize in 30 seconds.

Setup

App Setup Instructions

Install Python, Pipenv and Postgres on your machine, if you do not have them already

To install Pipenv on a Mac, you can run $ brew install pipenv

You should have Python 3.8.5

$ python3 --version
=> Python 3.8.5

You should have Postgres

$ which psql
=> /Applications/Postgres.app/Contents/Versions/latest/bin/psql

You should have pipenv

$ pipenv --version
=> pipenv, version 2020.8.13

Fork and clone down the repository
Change into the directory $ cd eth_crowdfund_be
You will need to work in a virtual environment. Why? Using a virtual environment for Python projects allows us to have an isolated working copy of Python so we can work on a specific project without worrying about affecting other projects.
Within the root directory:
a. Run # pipenv --three to create the virtual environment
c. Run $ pipenv install to install all dependencies
d. Run $ createdb eth_crowdfund_api_db to create the app database
e. Run $ createdb eth_crowdfund_api_db_test to create the testing database
f. Run $ touch .env to create an enviornment file e. Within the .env file add appropriate environment values for flask enviornment, database URLs, and localhost port

Run the following to activate the project virtual environment. When you are done working on the project, you should execute $ exit to exit the virtual environment

Within the `pipenv shell` virtual environment, run the following:

Ensure you are at /eth_crowdfund_be
Run $ python3 manage.py seed
Start server with $ python3 run.py
Visit localhost:3000/api/v1/campaigns and localhost:3000/api/v1/requests and you should see seeded Campaigns and Requests.

Updating the Database Instructions

Path: /eth_crowdfund_be
To make updates to the database and run a new migration, run the following:

 $ python3 manage.py db stamp head
 $ python3 manage.py db init
 $ python3 manage.py db migrate
 $ python3 manage.py db upgrade

Note: If you encounter any root errors, such as ERROR [root] Error: Target database is not up to date. or ERROR [root] Error: Relative revision -1 didn't produce 1 migrations, run $ python3 manage.py db stamp head to reset the target database to your current database head.
