About Inundation Mapping

Inundation Mapping is a growing software repository designed to generate Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND) grids and synthetic rating curves (SRCs) for use in flood inundation mapping (FIM). Inundation Mapping techniques use and build upon established hydrologic conditioning principles. The Inundation Mapping development project began in early 2020, emphasizing a shift in the HAND dataset production software to use open-source tools and associated software. Inundation Mapping is maintained by a small team of hydrologists, geographers, and software engineers at the NOAA National Water Center, but all are welcome to collaborate.

Inundation Mapping code is consistently being changed and upgraded. The current version is FIM4. It overcomes the catchment boundary issues and introduces generalized main stem (GMS) and Branch Zero. The repository is currently undergoing a significant documentation phase and a dependency refactor. Please refer to the CHANGELOG for the latest updates. For stability, we advise using the latest released version of Inundation Mapping. Check out the Inundation Mapping Quick Facts or the Known Issues and Opportunities for Improvement pages. Check out the README for information on getting started or to see scientific credits and references.
