SOCKET TO ME

As i find myself working on several machines where i can't install any communication software or log into services due to the machines is to be shipped to production without containing my credentials or applications, i wrote this simple application to try to solve that problem.

Often i found myself needing to share system logs or other investigative information from a machine i was working on to my main work station. To avoid installing applications on a client or production device or even logging into services to share information, i scrambled this easy to run project / docker image that basically runs a socket.io chat modified to allow sharing textual data between devices running from one device, and allowing other devices on the same LAN to access the same socket.io instance, providing the firewall allows for access.

Please note that this project is intended to run on a LAN network and offers no authentication or even persistence between server restarts. It is however the fastest and easiest way for me to share text and information between two or more machines without intalling any applications or signing in to any services.

NOTE:

This project discriminates against LAN networks not using the "192.168.1.*" standard. This should only affect file upload, and not general sharing of data.

INSTALLATION AND USAGE

Run either as a docker image: Docker image

docker pull null4bl3/socket-to-me

docker run -p 5555:5555 null4bl3/socket-to-me

or clone the repository and run:

npm install

node index.js

Do NOT leave this project running unattended and publicly available as it offers no authentication at all. To reset persisted data every day at midnight, set the 'NODE_ENV' to 'PRODUCTION'.
