System.Runtime.Intrinsics work planned for .NET 8

This is a work in progress as we develop our .NET 8 plans. This list is expected to change throughout the release cycle according to ongoing planning and discussions, with possible additions and subtractions to the scope.

Summary

During .NET 8, we will be focusing on AVX-512, an effort that includes the addition of a new intrinsic type Vector512 as well as Vector<T> improvements. Beyond that major theme, we will invest in quality, enhancements and new APIs. This is an ambitious set of work, so it's likely that several of the items below will be pushed out beyond .NET 8. It is also likely additional items will be added throughout the year.

AVX-512

• Additional cross-platform hardware intrinsic APIs for loading/storing, reordering, and extracting a per-element "mask" #63331
• Expose Vector512<T> to support the x86/x64 AVX-512 instruction set #73262
• Expose System.Runtime.Intrinsics.X86.Avx512F #73604
• Expose VectorMask<T> to support generic masking for Vector<T> #74613
• Expose System.Runtime.Intrinsics.X86.Avx512F.VL #74813
• Explore adding an IVector<TSelf, T> interface implemented by Vector128<T>/Vector256<T> #76244
• Expose AVX512BW, AVX512CD, and AVX512DQ #76579
• Vector64/128/256/512<T> and Vector<T> Consistency/Enhancements #76593

Quality

• Document when each of the vectorization approaches should be used #64409
• Switch from direct intrinsics usage to Vector/Vector64/Vector128/Vector256 #64451
