Social clipping was an issue. I honestly never knew what my friends were clipping. But still, I don't think @mentions were the key

@mentions were designed to be useful for sharing private clips: http://blog.clipboard.com/2011/10/14/1-Sharing-Clips

But, really, who does that? I can understand project collaboration, but use a private board / page for that (that concept wasn't exactly ironed out when Clipboard debuted @mentions). If you really want to show somebody a single clip, you're probably in touch with them on a messenger client, in which case you can send them the clip link.
