Unfortunately the HGFS kernel module fails to work properly if you're running the 8.0.1 boxes on VMWare Fusion 8.0.2

Seems like this might be a repeat of #283

any workaround/fix for this yet?

This requires re-rolling the bento image which I fully plan to do but unfortunately I've been on the road and unable to dedicate time to upgrading the build pipeline.

@pkyeck Once any provisioning scripts fail and you can ssh into the VM, you can manually resolve the issue by installing kernel headers, build-essentials, and re-running vmware-config-tools.pl as root.

This should be fixed with the 2.2.3 release of boxes.

@cheeseplus It's not. Fusion 8.1.0

@justinko we don't build for Fusion 8.1.0 due to https://communities.vmware.com/message/2561728#2561728

Also the nature of the vmware drivers require a unique compile for each version so please open a unique issue for this case. It's hyper annoying because as of yet there doesn't seem to be a nice way to get a driver installed at one version to work for any versions but itself.

VMWare has published a workaround: https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2016/01/workaround-of-nat-port-forwarding-issue-in-fusion-8-1.html

Could you please build some images that will work with VMWare 8.1.0?

I'd rather not build images that require a more than hacky manual workaround because they will not be generally useful to most users in the best case and break things in the worst case. I'll happily build them once a properly patched version is out but right now pushing this seems like it would break more people than it would benefit.

@cheeseplus we could really use this, hope you would reconsider

hacky workaround is better than all of our users getting images that can't even bootstrap because of HGFS fails

So @kisoku and I discussed offline and I'm circling back here:

If we upgrade the image for folks using 8.1 we break HGFS everyone else who didn't update because folks like HashiCorp (and others) said not to because of the port forwarding bug. There is a small cross section of folks who both updated and applied the patch and it's such a small minority I can't justify breaking the default at this time.

Agreed! 👍
