Bär, der große, alte, struppige Hofhund auf Hoël, saß auf der Türtreppe
und schaute ernsthaft über den Hof. Es war ein kalter, klarer
Spätwintertag, und der Schnee glitzerte im Sonnenschein. Am liebsten
wäre Bär aber doch hineingegangen; denn es ließ sich nicht leugnen: wie
er da saß, fror ihn grimmig an den Pfoten, und er hob abwechselnd bald
die eine, bald die andre eine Weile von den Steinfliesen empor, um nicht
das Kribbeln in die Klauen zu bekommen.
Aber er durfte seinen Posten nicht verlassen. Die Schweine und die
Ziegen waren heute im Freien. Noch führten sie sich zwar alle ganz
anständig auf; die Schweine gingen dort in der Sonne und rieben sich an
der Ecke des Kuhstalls, und weiter weg knabberten die Ziegen eifrig an
der Baumrinde, die beim Schweinestall auf einen großen Haufen für sie
zusammengekehrt war, und taten so, als hätten sie an nichts andres zu
denken. Aber er wußte von früher her: kaum war er hineingegangen, da
lagerten sie sich sogleich mitten in den Haustüren und verübten all den
Unfug, den sie sich nur ausdenken konnten -- die große neue Ziege
Krummhorn, die erst im letzten Herbst auf den Hof gekommen war, und die
er noch nicht ordentlich abgerichtet, hatte bereits einen Schwuppdich
bis an die Hausecke hin gemacht und ihn dabei so gleichgültig und
überlegen angesehen.
Die war wirklich eine unerträgliche Person, aber sie sollte sich bloß
unterstehen --!
Ein Weilchen wenigstens mußte er noch sitzen bleiben -- die Wege durfte
er ja auch nicht ganz aus dem Auge verlieren, es hätte doch jemand
kommen können. The
Zufällig drehte er den Kopf nach dem schmalen Pfad hin, der die Halde
schräg vom Oberdorf herabkam.
Alle Wetter! Was war denn das?
Dort kam Etwas -- etwas Rundes, Putziges, Winziges -- ärgerlich, daß die
Augen nicht mehr recht mitwollten! -- ja, ja, er mußte auf alle Fälle
Meldung machen.
Er fing an zu bellen, ein kurzes, tiefes Gekläff, das weit
hinausschallte. Die Ziegen sprangen ängstlich in einen Klumpen zusammen
und spitzten die Ohren, die Schweine hörten jählings auf, sich zu jucken
und zu kratzen, und lauschten -- ja, da konnte man sehen, daß sie vor
ihm Furcht hatten.
Dann blieb er wieder ruhig sitzen und sah den Weg hinauf. Nein aber, ob
er jemals etwas Ähnliches gesehen hatte -- vielleicht war es nicht
einmal etwas, das er zu melden brauchte; aber immerhin mußte er sich
wohl auf den Weg machen und sich die Sache etwas näher ansehen.
Er krümmte den buschigen Schwanz in einen großen Bogen; man sollte
sehen, daß er bester Laune war, und trippelte zum Hofe hinaus.
Es mußte aber doch wohl ein Mensch sein. Es fing an, so leibhaftig der
Finn-Kathrine zu gleichen, die dort im Winter zu gehen pflegte, aber die
konnte es doch nicht sein; denn dazu war das Wesen dort allzu winzig.
Aber ein weiter, langer Weiberrock war es jedenfalls, und unter dem Rock
kamen die Spitzen von einem Paar großer Schuhe hervor, über die graue,
abgeschnittne Strumpffüße gezogen waren. Über den Rock war ein großer
Bausch Gestricktes gewurstelt, aus dem zwei Stummel mit roten,
gestrickten Fausthandschuhen hervorguckten. Oben drauf saß ein etwas
kleinerer Bausch Gestricktes -- das war wohl der Kopf. Hinten auf dem
Rücken hing ein großes Bündel in einem dunkelfarbigen Einschlagetuch und
vorn ein kleiner, niedlicher, rotgemalter Holzeimer.
Bär mußte unwillkürlich stehen bleiben und sehen. Das rätselhafte Wesen
war nun ebenfalls seiner gewahr geworden und wie unschlüssig stehen
geblieben. Da ging er auf die äußerste Wegkante hinüber, blieb dort
stehen und versuchte, so gleichgültig wie möglich auszusehen, um das
Wesen nicht zu erschrecken. Dies ging dann vorsichtig, wie auf Stelzen,
langsam wieder vorwärts, indem es sich dicht an der andern Seite des
Weges hindrückte und drehte sich allmählich, je näher es herankam, so
daß es ganz der Quere ging, als es endlich gerade vor Bär angelangt war.
Da gelang es aber Bär, einen kurzen Blick durch eine kleine Öffnung in
dem obersten Strickbausch zu werfen, und was sah er! Erst ein kleines,
rotes, aufwärtsstrebendes Stumpfnäschen, dann einen roten Mund, der
unsicher zuckte, als wollte er zu weinen anfangen, und ein Paar große
blaue Augen, die ihn erschrocken anstarrten.
Bah! Das war ja bloß ein kleines Mädel, das wegen der Kälte tüchtig
eingemummelt war. Er kannte sie zwar nicht, aber -- wart mal -- das
Eimerchen kam ihm so bekannt vor. Jedenfalls war es keine Art, sich hier
barsch zu stellen und so ein kleines Ding zu erschrecken.
Unwillkürlich wedelte er mit dem Schwanze während er hinüberging, um den
Eimer zu beschnüffeln.
Aber das kleine Mädchen verstand ihn nicht sofort, erschrocken trat es
vielmehr ein paar Schritte zurück und purzelte rücklings neben dem Wege
hin. Da sprang Bär rasch zur Seite und lief ein Stückchen voraus, sah
sich wieder um und blinzelte freundlich mit den Augen und wedelte
kräftig mit dem Schwanze. Jetzt begriff sie, stand auf, lächelte und
trippelte hinter ihm drein. Bär humpelte voran, sich immer wieder
umsehend; nun erkannte er, daß sie sicher irgend einen Auftrag auf Hoël
auszurichten hatte, und da war es seine einfache Pflicht und
Schuldigkeit, ihr zurecht zu helfen.
Das kleine Mädchen war Sidsel Langröckchen von Schloß Guckaus oben auf
der Höhe, die dergestalt auf Hoël ihren Einzug hielt.
Schloß Guckaus lag auf einem öden, unfruchtbaren Berghang, weit vorn,
gerade unter dem Großhammer, zu alleroberst im Oberdorf, und der Name --
es hieß eigentlich Neu-Wüstenland -- war ein Spitzname, den ihm ein
Spottvogel gegeben, weil man von da oben einen weiten Ausguck hatte, und
weil es allem andern eher als einem Schloß glich. Das Krongut, das zum
Schloß gehörte, bestand bloß aus etwas Heideland, wo Heidel- und
Preiselbeerkraut üppig gedieh, unterbrochen hier und da von einem
kleinen Fleckchen Ackerboden oder einem Stückchen Wiese.
Die Stallgebäude bestanden aus einem untermauerten Kuhstall mit zwei
Ständen, halb in den Hügel eingegraben, und einem kleinen Schweinekofen
im gleichen Stil. Und das Schloß selbst war ein winzig kleines, mit
Rasen gedecktes Häuschen, das ganz vorn am Abhang mitten in der Einöde
lag. Es hatte bloß ein niedriges Fensterchen mit ganz kleinen Scheiben,
das ins Tal hinabschaute.
Fast überall aber, wo man im Umkreis sein mochte -- wenn man in der
Richtung hinsah und den Blick hoch genug hinaufwandte, überall sah man
stets dieses Schloß und dies Guckfensterchen, das wie ein kleines Auge
über das Tal hinausblickte.
Wenn nun die Herrlichkeit, von der sie herkam, nicht größer war, so kann
man sich wohl leicht denken, daß Sidsel Langröckchen just keine
verkleidete Prinzessin war, sondern schlecht und recht ein kleines armes
Bettelkind. Und zum ersten Mal auf den Hof von Hoël zu kommen, war für
sie dasselbe, als wenn sie wirklich zu Hofe gekommen wäre, obschon sie
in einem gar wichtigen, eigentlich nur für Erwachsene passenden Auftrag
geschickt war; sie kam nämlich an Stelle ihrer Mutter als Spinnfrau.
Sidsels Mutter, Rönnaug, hatte nun schon vier Jahre lang oben auf Schloß
Guckaus allein für den Unterhalt der Familie sorgen müssen. Früher war
es ihnen gut gegangen; da war aber der Mann gestorben, und nun saß sie
allein da mit dem Schloß, einer Kuh und zwei Kindern, Jakob, der damals
ungefähr sechs Jahre zählte, und Sidsel, die zwei Jahre jünger war. Es
hielt oft schwer genug, aber sie hatten doch immerhin ein Dach über dem
Kopfe, und nach Brennholz brauchten sie auch nicht weit zu laufen, der
Wald lag gerade vor der Tür.
Im Sommer konnte sie den harten, steinigen Boden gerade soweit
aufkratzen, daß sie auf dem jämmerlich kleinen Fleckchen Ackerland
Kartoffeln und etwas Korn bauen konnte, und Heidegras und frisches Laub,
das sie sammelte, gab es gerade genug, um die Kuh Bliros jedes Jahr
durchfüttern zu können. Und wo eine Kuh ist, da gibt's auch immer was zu
leben.
Im Winter spann sie fleißig Leinwand und Wolle für die Bäuerinnen unten
im Dorfe und vor allem für Kjersti Hoël, die Großbäuerin, bei der sie
als Magd gedient hatte, ehe sie sich verheiratete.
Auf diese Weise hatte sie sich durchgeschlagen. Unterdessen war der
Jakob so groß geworden, daß er selber für sich sorgen konnte. Im letzten
Frühling war auf Nordrum Nachfrage nach einem Hirtenbuben gewesen, und
da hatte er sofort zugeschlagen. Er und Sidsel hatten so oft oben in der
Stube vor dem kleinen Guckfensterchen auf den Knieen gelegen,
hinausgeschaut und überlegt, wo sie wohl beide einmal dienen würden,
wenn sie erst groß wären. Und da hatte der Knabe immer Nordrum für sich
gewählt, hauptsächlich deshalb, weil er den Bauer von Nordrum immer als
einen besonders starken Mann hat rühmen hören, -- sie dagegen hatte
gemeint, besser müsse es auf Hoël sein, wo bloß Frauensleute wären.
Im Herbst hatte dann der Nordrum gesagt, so einen Burschen wie den Jakob
könne er auch im Winter brauchen, und da war Jakob dort geblieben.
Er war sogar schon letzte Weihnachten einen ganzen Tag wieder zu Hause
gewesen, und da hatte er der Schwester ein Weihnachtsgeschenk
mitgebracht von einem kleinen Mädchen auf dem Nordrumhofe, einen gar
feinen Unterrock aus grauem Fries.
Und wie lustig und spaßig er geworden war! Als sie den neuen Rock, der
ihr vorn wie hinten bis ganz herunter auf die Füße reichte, zum
erstenmal angezogen hatte, da hatte er sie Sidsel _Langröckchen_
genannt.
Nach Weihnachten aber war oben auf Schloß Guckaus die Not eingezogen.
Die Kuh Bliros, die sonst fast das ganze Jahr hindurch Milch gab, ließ
es sich plötzlich einfallen, mehrere Monate trocken zu stehen; sie
sollte erst zum Sommer hin kalben. Die letzte Woche hatte es nicht
einmal mehr Milch zum Kaffee gegeben.
Bis zum Nachbarhof Svehaugen war es auch nicht bloß ein Katzensprung,
und dort war es zudem auch knapp mit der Milch, das wußte Rönnaug, und
außerdem hatte sie keine Zeit, sie mußte sich sputen, daß sie mit der
Wolle, die sie für Kjersti Hoël spann, endlich fertig wurde und sie bald
abliefern konnte, dann wurde wohl auch Rat für Milch und Kaffee und
andres mehr. Deshalb arbeitete sie unausgesetzt die ganze Woche hindurch
-- Sidsel war nun so groß, daß sie beim Karden helfen konnte -- und
trank den Kaffee schwarz. War es nun aber, weil sie den schwarzen Kaffee
nicht vertragen konnte, oder ein andrer Grund, -- als sie gestern abend
spät fertig geworden war, fühlte sie einen saugenden Schmerz unter der
Brust, und als sie heute früh aufstand und sich fertig machte, mit der
Wolle nach Hoël zu gehen, wurde ihr mit einem Mal so übel und
schwindlig, daß sie sich wieder aufs Bett legen mußte. Sie fühlte sich
ganz elend. Nun war es aber Sitte, daß die Spinnfrau, was sie
gesponnnen, auch selber brachte, und da bekam sie nicht bloß Vergütung
für ihre Arbeit, sondern wurde auch bewirtet und erhielt neue Aufträge
und Bescheid, wie das nächste Garn gesponnen werden sollte.
Doch diesmal war wirklich kein andrer Ausweg, sie mußte Sidsel schicken.
Sie würde sich schon zurechtfinden, obwohl sie noch nie auf Hoël gewesen
war, und soviel würde sie wohl auch mit nach Hause bringen, daß sie
wenigstens wieder einmal eine ordentliche Tasse Kaffee trinken könnten,
dann konnte sie ja an einem der nächsten Tage immer noch selber gehen.
Wenn sie sich nur darauf verlassen könnte, daß Sidsel sich ordentlich zu
benehmen verstände und sich nicht gar zu ungelenk anstellte?
O ja, hatte Sidsel gemeint, wenn sie nur gehen dürfte, dann würde sie
sich schon richtig zu benehmen wissen, genau wie eine Spinnfrau; denn
sie erinnerte sich sehr gut daran, wie die es machten, von damals, als
sie die Mutter nach Nordrum begleiten durfte.
Da hatte denn Sidsel ihren Fries-Unterrock angezogen -- sie trug ihn wie
einen richtigen Rock und nur bei festlichen Gelegenheiten -- war
ordentlich in eine Menge Tücher und wollene Schale eingewickelt worden,
hatte das große Garnknäuel hinten auf den Rücken gehängt bekommen, den
Milcheimer vorn um den Hals und außerdem viele gute Lehren und
Ermahnungen mit auf den Weg, und so ging es zu, daß sie heute hinter Bär
hertrippelnd in den Hof von Hoël einzog.
Als sie an den Wirtschaftsgebäuden vorüberkam, mußte sie wirklich stehen
bleiben und sich umsehen. Ja, hier war freilich alles viel großartiger
als daheim! Ein Scheunentor so breit, daß das ganze Guckaus-Schloß hätte
hindurchfahren können, und eine einzige Fensterscheibe war mindestens
ebenso groß, wie das ganze Fenster oben im Schloß! Und solch eine Ziege!
-- Sie bekam gerade Krummhorn zu Gesicht, die der Haustür bereits
bedenklich nahe war und kaum Miene machte auszureißen, als Bär herankam.
Nicht einmal vor dem Hunde war die bange! Sie war freilich auch so groß
wie ein ordentliches Kalb! Wenn die Kühe nach demselben Maßstabe waren,
da mußten sie ja vom Erdboden aus das Gras auf dem Dache von Schloß
Guckaus fressen können! Sie mußte unwillkürlich nach der Tür des
Kuhstalls hinschielen. Nein, die war doch nicht größer als Stalltüren
gewöhnlich sind -- da waren die Kühe doch wohl wie andre auch.
Bär hatte unterdessen die Zeit benutzt, um Krummhorn zurecht zu weisen,
nun kam er zurück, wedelte lustig mit dem Schwanze und wandte sich nach
der Haustür, als ob er die Kleine hineingeleiten wollte. Ja, der Hund
hatte recht, sie mußte sich wirklich beeilen, um ihren Auftrag
auszurichten und durfte nicht länger hier stehen und gaffen.
Sie folgte Bär nach, ging in die Hausflur hinein, hob die Türklinke,
drehte sich ganz um sich selbst herum, als sie die Tür wieder zumachte,
und stand dann in der großen Küche von Hoël.
In der Küche waren bloß eine Magd, die in der Mitte des großen Raumes
saß und spann, und Kjersti Hoël selbst, die an dem großen,
weißgetünchten Herde saß und Kaffee mahlte.
Beide sahen auf, als die Tür geöffnet wurde.
Sidsel blieb einen Augenblick stehen, machte dann einen so tiefen Knix,
daß sie in dem weiten, langen Rock förmlich untertauchte, und sagte wie
eine Erwachsene, genau wie sie die Mutter hatte sagen hören: Guten Tag,
lieben Leute, Gott segne eure Arbeit!
Kjersti Hoël mußte lächeln, als sie das winzige Ding an der Tür wie eine
Erwachsene reden hörte, aber dann sprach sie ebenfalls wie zu einer
Erwachsenen. Guten Tag, fremde Jungfer, geht sie Gänge?
Ja, so ist es.
Wie heißt denn die Jungfer, und wo kommst du her? ich sehe, ich kenne
dich nicht.
Nein, das ist wohl nicht anders zu erwarten; aber meine Mutter und der
Jakob nennen mich Sidsel Langröckchen; und ich bin von Schloß Guckaus,
und ich sollte für Mutter mit dem Wollgarn hierher gehen, das sie für
dich gesponnen hat, und sollte dir sagen, sie hätte nicht eher damit
kommen können, da sie erst gestern spät abends den letzten Wickel
anscheren konnte.
Nein, ist es die Spinnfrau, die Gänge geht! Und ich vergesse rein, dich
zu bitten, Platz zu nehmen. Nun lege nur ab und setze dich!
Wie leutselig Kjersti Hoël war. Stand sie doch sogar auf und brachte ihr
einen Stuhl!
Danke, ich bin so frei.
Sidsel nahm den Eimer und das Garnknäuel herunter und setzte beides bei
der Tür nieder. Darauf begann sie über die Diele zu gehen. Ihr war, als
wollte der Weg bis zum Stuhl gar kein Ende nehmen -- bis hin zum Stuhl
war es fast ebenso weit, wie zu Hause von der Haustür bis zum Kuhstall!
-- Endlich kam sie glücklich ans Ziel und vermochte sich mit Mühe und
Not bis auf die äußerste Kante des Stuhles hinaufzuschieben; der Stuhl
war auch viel höher, als sie es gewohnt war.
Kjersti Hoël kam nun zu ihr hin: Da will ich doch einmal das Knäuel
auflösen und sehen, was eigentlich drin steckt, sagte sie, und dabei
begann sie, ihr erst die roten Fausthandschuhe auszuziehen und dann alle
die wollenen Schaltücher aufzubinden. Bald saß Sidsel abgetakelt da,
aber doch noch immer hübsch rundlich in ihrem kurzen Oberleibchen; denn
der weite Rock war nicht nur unten zu lang, auch oben reichte er ihr bis
dicht unter die Arme.
Kjersti blieb stehen und sah sie eine Weile an:
Dachte ich mir's doch, daß ich ein niedliches kleines Mädel in dem
Knäuel finden würde. Du ähnelst deiner Mutter.
Sidsel wurde so verschämt, daß sie ganz vergaß, daß sie ja Spinnfrau
spielen sollte. Sie schlug die Augen nieder und wußte nicht, was sie
antworten sollte.
Was ist denn aber mit der Rönnaug, deiner Mutter, daß sie nicht selber
kommt?
Sie fühlte sich heute morgen nicht wohl.
Nein, ist sie krank? Rönnaug war doch sonst immer die Gesundheit selber.
Was fehlt ihr denn?
Sie meinte, es müsse wohl der schwarze Kaffee sein, der ihr schlecht
bekommen ist.
Seid ihr denn ohne Milch? Ja, nun sehe ich erst, du hast den Eimer mit.
Ja, denk dir nur, die Bliros läßt sich's auf einmal einfallen, den
ganzen Winter trocken zu stehen.
Nein, wirklich? Ja, da ist es freilich nicht so leicht für deine Mutter.
Wird denn die Bliros lange trocken stehen?
Freilich, sie soll ja erst zum Sommer hin kalben.
Hm!
Kjersti wurde nachdenklich und sagte wie für sich selber:
Ich habe wirklich schon oft vorgehabt, Rönnaug zu besuchen, aber es ist
nie etwas draus geworden; nun will ich aber sehen, ob ich nicht in
diesem Frühjahr einmal dazu komme.

Sidsel Langröckchen blieb an dem Tage lange auf Hoël. Obwohl sie als
Spinnfrau gekommen war, hätte sie es sich doch nie träumen lassen, daß
eine Großbäuerin wie Kjersti Hoël so leutselig und freundlich zu ihr
sein könnte. Sie bewirtete sie mit allerlei Eßwaren, mit Kaffee, Milch
und Kuchen, als wäre sie zu Gaste geladen; und sie unterhielt sich mit
ihr so freundlich, daß sie alle Schüchternheit ganz vergaß. Und wie viel
Merkwürdiges zeigte sie ihr!
Der Kuhstall war nun aber doch das Allerfeinste. So viele Kühe, daß sie
sie kaum zählen konnte, und Schweine, Schafe und Ziegen! Und in einem
großen Hühnerstall eine ganze Masse Hühner, ganz sicher so viele, wie es
im Herbst oben auf Guckaus Krähen gab!
Und über alles wollte die Großbäuerin genaue Auskunft haben, ob sie
lesen und schreiben könne -- nun, das konnte sie, das hatte sie ja vom
Jakob gelernt --, und ob sie oben auf Schloß Guckaus genug zu essen
hätten, und wie die Ernte ausgefallen wäre.
Und Sidsel konnte erzählen, sie hätten im Herbst drei Scheffel
Kartoffeln geerntet und einen Scheffel und sechs Liter Mischkorn, und so
viel Laub hätten sie gesammelt, daß sie reichlich Futter hätten, um
Bliros den Winter durchzufüttern, und sogar noch mehr.
Und nachdem Kjersti ihr die Schafe und die Ziegen gezeigt hatte, da
hatte sie wahrhaftig angedeutet, daß sie wahrscheinlich zum Frühling hin
eine Hirtin haben müsse, und da hatte Sidsel -- sie wußte selbst nicht,
wie sie dazu kam -- der Kjersti erzählt, wie sie daheim vom Fensterchen
aus sich immer Hoël ausgewählt habe, für den Fall, daß sie in Dienst
gehen müsse.
Ob sie denn gern von zu Hause fort wolle?
O ja, wenn es nur nicht so schmerzlich wäre, die Mutter verlassen zu
müssen.
Nun, darüber wollten sie jetzt nicht weiter reden -- sie würde schon im
Frühjahr einmal kommen und mit der Mutter sprechen. Jetzt müßten sie
aber ins Haus, damit sie etwas zu essen bekäme zur Stärkung für die
Reise; denn sie müsse wohl nun daran denken, heimzukehren, es ginge ja
bereits auf den Abend.
Darauf gingen sie wieder ins Haus, und Sidsel wurde von neuem bewirtet,
und während sie aß, sah sie, wie Kjersti Butter und Käse und andres mehr
aus dem Keller heraufholte, und alles in das große Einschlagetuch, in
dem das Garn gewesen war, einwickelte. Aber den Milcheimer rührte sie
nicht an; dagegen bemerkte Sidsel, daß sie leise etwas zur Magd sagte
und daß diese hinausging.
Nachdem Sidsel gegessen und, wie es sich geziemt: Dank und Ehre für
Essen und Trinken gesagt hatte, meinte Kjersti:
Ja, nun heb mal das Bündel und versuch, ob du es tragen kannst.
Das war nun freilich tüchtig schwer, doch sie würde es schon erschleppen
können. Aber noch immer erwähnte Kjersti den Eimer nicht.
Ja so, nun komm her, Sidsel, ich will dir mit den Schaltüchern helfen!
Sie zog ihr die dicken Handschuhe über die Finger, wickelte sie in alle
die vielen Schaltücher ein, und bald stand Sidsel wieder reisefertig da,
ebenso wohl verpackt, wie sie gekommen war.
Niedergeschlagen ging sie zur Tür hin, wo der Eimer stand. Aber noch
immer sagte die Großbäuerin nichts wegen des Eimers. Unschlüssig blieb
sie stehen; sie hatte wirklich so viel Gutes bekommen, daß es nicht gut
anging, sie geradezu an die Milch zu erinnern, aber viel lieber hätte
sie etwas von der reichen Bewirtung entbehrt, als daß sie ohne
Kaffeemilch zur Mutter heimgekommen wäre.
Sie hob das Bündel auf, steckte die Nasenspitze in das Schaltuch hinein,
damit Kjersti nicht sehen sollte, daß ihr die Tränen in die Augen
traten, als sie sich endlich bückte, um den leeren Eimer zu fassen.
Da sagte Kjersti:
Aber da hätte ich ja wahrhaftig beinahe ganz vergessen, dich zu fragen,
ob du nicht mit mir tauschen willst, wenn du für deinen Eimer einen
andern bekommst, der der Art ist, daß er überhaupt nie leer wird. Willst
du?
Sidsel ließ den Eimer fallen. Wohl hatte sie heute viel Wunderbares
gesehen und gehört, wovon sie niemals eine Ahnung gehabt und desgleichen
sie noch nie gesehen hatte! Aber daß Kjersti nun gar einen Eimer hatte,
der nie leer wurde! -- Sie blieb mit offenem Munde stehen.
Jedenfalls mußt du ihn dir ansehen -- er steht draußen vor der Tür.
Sidsel war nicht faul, hinauszukommen.
Kjersti folgte ihr. Da stand die Dienstmagd und hielt die große Ziege,
Krummhorn, an der Leine.
Kjersti sagte:
Sie ist die Leine gewohnt; ich denke also, sie wird schon mit dir gehen.
Und nun grüß mir deine Mutter und frag sie, ob sie mit dem Eimertausch
zufrieden ist -- und sie wurde nicht einmal böse, daß Sidsel
Langröckchen ganz vergaß, danke zu sagen, als sie mit Krummhorn von
dannen zog, während Bär sie ein langes Stück Wegs begleitete; denn was
hier vor sich ging, das ging über seinen Verstand.

Es läßt sich denken, daß Mutter Rönnaug auf Guckaus auch große Augen
machte, als sie Sidsel in dem Aufzug kommen sah. Aber es war keine Zeit,
alles gleich zu erzählen.
Der Stand neben Bliros mußte geräumt und in Ordnung gebracht werden.
Denn nun war es, als hätten sie zwei Kühe, und Krummhorn spazierte so
stolz und überlegen in ihren Stand hinein, als ob sie selber eine Kuh
wäre, und ihr Lebtag immer im Kuhstall gestanden hätte. Bliros aber war
sichtlich beleidigt, daß dieses neue Wundertier da hereinkam und sich in
_ihrem_ Stalle breit machte, und sie machte eine Bewegung mit dem Kopfe,
um nach ihr zu stoßen. Aber da stieß Krummhorn so gleichgültig wieder,
als sei sie's nur so gewohnt, sich mit Kühen herumzustoßen.
Bliros mußte sie sich wirklich ansehen, so ein albernes Ding war ihr
denn doch noch nicht vorgekommen!
Darauf drehte sie sich wieder nach der Wand zu und sah überhaupt nicht
mehr nach Krummhorn hin.
An dem Abend hatte Sidsel Langröckchen so viel zu erzählen, daß sie sich
selber in den Schlaf schwätzte.
Abschied von Schloß Guckaus.
Als Sidsel Langröckchen das nächste Mal nach Hoël kam, da kam sie nicht
allein, und da kam sie, um für immer dort zu bleiben.
Alles war ganz, ganz anders gekommen, als sie sich gedacht hatte. Aber
sie hatte gewissermaßen keine Zeit gehabt, sich die Sache eher richtig
klar zu machen, als gerade in dem Augenblick, da sie jetzt aus dem
Gattertor des Guckausschlosses heraustrat -- so vielerlei war in der
letzten Zeit auf sie eingestürmt, so viel Neues hatte es zu sehen und zu
hören gegeben, daß sie nicht einmal Ruhe gefunden, sich richtig
auszuweinen, obschon sie immer wie mit einem Tränenkloß im Halse
heimgegangen war; als sie jetzt aber Halt machte und sich umsah, da
brachte das Bild, das sie sah, auf einmal ihr alles klar und traurig
deutlich ins Gedächtnis zurück. Nun war etwas vorbei, etwas, das niemals
wiederkommen konnte; nie wieder sollte sie nach Guckaus zurückkehren,
höchstens als Fremde, sie hatte niemand -- nirgends ein Heim mehr.
Und da begann sie zu weinen so bitterlich, daß alle, die erst gemeint
hatten, sie hätte alles so ruhig und vernünftig hingenommen,
unwillkürlich stehen blieben und sie ganz verwundert ansahen.

Die letzten paar Wintermonate waren für Sidsel oben auf Schloß Guckaus
so schnell vergangen, sie wußte gar nicht wo sie geblieben waren. Und
das kam nicht zum geringsten Teil daher, daß sie zu all dem übrigen die
letzte Zeit unglaublich viel im Kuhstall zu tun bekommen hatte.
Krummhorn war nun gewissermaßen ihre Kuh geworden, und es war
selbstverständlich, daß Sidsel sie warten mußte; denn Bliros gab
deutlich zu verstehen, daß sie es höchst ungnädig aufgenommen hätte,
wenn Rönnaug selber sich mit der Wartung einer ärmlichen Ziege hätte
abgeben wollen, gerade als ob diese eine ebenso wichtige Person im
Kuhstall wäre wie sie selber -- denn der Kuhstall gehörte nun doch ihr
allein -- dies andre Tier war da bloß geduldet.
Und deshalb wartete Sidsel Krummhorn genau so, wie sie die Mutter Bliros
warten sah; ja, sie bekam sogar noch mehr als die Mutter im Stalle zu
tun. Denn sie lernte bald die Ziege selber melken, und Bliros, Mutters
Kuh, melkte ja überhaupt nicht mehr.
Ob Krummhorn Milch gab? Oh, sie mußte sie oft dreimal am Tage melken!
Nun war an Kaffeemilch oder Milchbrei kein Mangel mehr, es blieb sogar
mitunter genug übrig, um noch Waffeln zu backen.
Dann kam der Frühling, und der kam oben auf Schloß Guckaus immer zeitig.
Das Heideland, das mitten in der Sonne lag, guckte immer zu allererst im
ganzen Tal aus dem Schnee hervor.
Und da ging Sidsel hin und untersuchte den Boden -- es war ein so
wunderliches Gefühl, wieder die bloße Erde unter den Füßen zu fühlen;
und Tag für Tag beobachtete sie genau, wie die einzelnen Flecken größer
und größer wurden, wie der Schnee allmählich abwärts glitt, ganz
langsam, genau wie ihr langer Rock an ihr selber hinabglitt, wenn sie
das Gürtelband löste und ihn fallen ließ, so daß er zuletzt wie ein
großer, bauschiger Ring um ihre Füße herum liegen blieb. Denn wenn erst
der Schnee bis zu dem großen Steine hinabgeglitten war, wo sie und Jakob
ihren eigenen Kuhstall zu haben und Tannenzapfen als Futter für ihre
Kühe und Schafe aufzubewahren pflegten -- dann fingen auch die äußersten
Knospen an den Bäumen an, dick zu werden und aufzuschwellen, fertig zum
Aufspringen, das wußte sie noch vom vorigen Jahre -- und auch danach sah
sie nun jeden Tag -- und _dann_, _dann_ kam endlich der große,
ereignisvolle Tag heran, wo Krummhorn ins Freie gelassen werden sollte,
das hatte die Mutter gesagt.
Das war es, worauf sie wartete. Nicht allein deshalb, weil es so lustig
war, nein auch, weil die Ziegen nie so kräftige, fette Milch gaben, als
wenn sie im Frühling die ersten Knospen zu fressen bekamen.
Die Mutter war seit dem Tage, da Sidsel zum erstenmal auf Hoël gewesen
war, nicht mehr recht wohl und munter gewesen; wenn aber Krummhorn nur
erst ihre Knospen zu knabbern bekam, dann würde sie schon wieder gesund
werden.
Obwohl sie listig etwas Sand darauf gestreut hatte, damit der Schnee
rascher wegschmelzen sollte, lag an dem Tage, da Sidsel Langröckchen in
den Stall ging, Krummhorn losband und ins Freie führte, freilich noch
immer ein winziger Streifen Schnee oben auf dem Steine.
Krummhorn ging ruhig und würdevoll, bis sie vor die Stalltüre gekommen
waren. Da blieb sie stehen, sah sich um und schnupperte gegen die Sonne.
Sidsel zog an der Leine, sie wollte zu dem Heideflecken hinunter ziehen,
wo sie die Birke stehen hatte, deren Knospen am weitesten vorgeschritten
waren.
Krummhorn blieb unbeweglich stehen, als ob gar nichts los wäre; sie war
so stark, daß sie nicht einmal den Hals reckte, so krampfhaft Sidsel
auch an der Leine ziehen mochte. Sidsel ging da näher heran, um die
Leine kürzer zu nehmen, aber da machte Krummhorn eine kurze Bewegung mit
dem Kopf, stieß so heftig mit den Hörnern nach Sidsel, daß diese
hinterrücks zu Boden fiel, und tänzelte dann gleichgültig davon.
Sidsel kam rasch wieder auf die Beine und setzte der Ziege nach. Als sie
ihr aber endlich so nahe gekommen war, daß sie eben nach der Leine am
Boden greifen wollte, da begann Krummhorn zu traben; sie galoppierte
nicht, wie Ziegen zu tun pflegen, sie trabte wie eine Kuh oder ein Elch,
trabte am Hause vorüber und schlug die Richtung nach Svehaugen ein.
Sidsel ihr nach; aber so sehr sie auch lief, holte sie sie doch nicht
ein. Schließlich stolperte sie über einen Stein, fiel hin, so lang sie
war, und hatte gerade noch Zeit, die Augen aufzuschlagen und Krummhorn
im Trabe über die Anhöhe verschwinden zu sehen.
Nun blieb ihr nichts andres übrig, als heimzulaufen und die Mutter zu
holen, und dann setzten sie beide der Ziege nach. Aber das wurde ein
langes Wettlaufen; erst dicht am Gatter von Svehaugen holten sie
Krummhorn ein. Dort stand sie und sah gelassen durch die Zaunpfähle; sie
dünkte sich offenbar zu gut, um, wie andre Ziegen, über den Zaun
hinwegzusetzen, sie, die sich einbildete, sie wäre eine Kuh.
Rönnaug war von dem langen Laufen ganz warm geworden und in Schweiß
gebadet, und am Abend, als sie zu Bett gegangen waren, sagte die Mutter,
sie friere so erbärmlich. Das schien Sidsel sonderbar; denn als sie ihr
Gesicht an den Hals der Mutter legte, war der so heiß wie ein glühender
Ofen.
Am nächsten Morgen weckte die Mutter Sidsel und bat sie, zu Kari
Svehaugen hinüberzugehen und sie zu bitten, sie möge zu ihr kommen und
nach ihr sehen, sie fühle sich ganz elend und werde gewiß nicht
aufstehen können.
Das kam Sidsel wieder seltsam vor; denn sie hatte die Mutter noch nie
mit so geröteten Wangen und mit so lebhaften Augen gesehen. Aber auf
einmal kam ihr alles so verwunderlich vor, daß sie kein Wort
hervorbrachte, sondern sofort aufstand, sich eilig ankleidete und
davonstürzte.
Nun kamen seltsame Tage oben im Guckausschloß. Wenn Sidsel Langröckchen
späterhin an die Zeit zurückdachte, war es ihr, als sei es wie ein
einziger schrecklich langer Tag gewesen, an dem so vielerlei geschehen
war, was sie sich gar nicht recht klar machen und auseinanderhalten
konnte. Alle Erinnerungen an diese Zeit waren wie Schatten, die in einem
gelblich flammenden, bösartigen Licht vorüberdrängten und sich jagten,
und durch all dies Gewirr hindurch hörte sie wie ein unablässiges Sausen
ein schweres, wehes Atemholen.
Ihr war, als könne sie in der Ferne Kari Svehaugen erkennen, die still
herumging und im Hause und im Kuhstall alles besorgte, und sie selbst
hatte gewiß mehrere Male oben im Geäst einer Birke gesessen und Knospen
gepflückt. Auch Lars Svehaugen glitt rasch an ihrem Auge vorüber, als
hätte er es furchtbar eilig. Und dann war einer gefahren gekommen, im
Pelz und mit großen, schweren Stiefeln, den alle umringten und dessen
Worten sie lauschten; und mit ihm kam ein eigentümlicher Geruch, der
gleichsam die ganze Stube ausfüllte, auch noch lange, nachdem er schon
wieder fort war.
Ihr war auch, als hätte sie Kjersti Hoël auf einem Stuhle sitzen und
allerhand gute Sachen aus einem großen Korbe auspacken sehen, und Jakob
stand daneben und hatte ein großes Stück Rosinenkuchen in der Hand, an
dem er kaute, immerfort kaute, als wäre es ihm unmöglich, den
Rosinenkuchen hinunterzuwürgen. Am deutlichsten sah sie seine Augen, sie
waren so groß und seltsam glänzend.
Dann war sie eines Morgens in blendend grauem Tageslicht erwacht. Und
von da ab sah sie alles und konnte sich auf alles ganz deutlich
besinnen. Sie lag in dem kleinen Kinderbette, in dem Jakob zu liegen
pflegte, als er noch zu Hause war -- sie mochte wohl alle diese Nächte
darin gelegen haben -- und Kari Svehaugen beugte sich über sie und sah
auf sie herab. Es war ganz still; das schwere, wehe Atemholen konnte sie
jetzt nicht mehr hören; es knisterte bloß im Feuer auf dem Herd, und ein
warmer Luftstrom drang von dort herein.
Kari sagte ganz still:
Nun hat es deine Mutter gut, kleine Sidsel, so gut, wie sie es nie zuvor
gehabt hat. Und deshalb sollst du auch nicht weinen.
Und Sidsel weinte auch nicht, sie stand bloß auf und ging ganz still
umher den ersten Tag.
Und später gab es so viele Vorbereitungen zu etwas Feierlichem, daß sie
kaum Zeit bekam, über die große Veränderung nachzudenken. Lars Svehaugen
kam vom Krämer mit so viel feinem weißem, blankem Zeug, wie sie noch nie
gesehen, und dann kam eine Frau und half der Kari, das Zeug
zurechtzuschneiden und ein Kissen und ein feines, weißes Kleid daraus zu
nähen, das die Mutter anhaben sollte, und auf dem weißen Kissen sollte
sie liegen.
Lars Svehaugen kam wieder und begann eine neue Bettstelle für die Mutter
zurecht zu zimmern; und gerade da kalbte Bliros, und das Kalb sollte
geschlachtet werden. Und Lars brachte feine Tannenbüsche und hämmerte
ein paar an der Tür draußen fest und andre auf die Gatterpfosten und
streute Tannenreisig auf den ganzen Weg bis ans Haus heran. Und allerlei
Sendungen kamen, eine solche Menge guter Sachen von Kjersti Hoël und von
andern, daß Sidsel noch nie so viel Gutes gekostet hatte.
Und dann kam der Tag, an dem die Mutter zur Kirche gefahren und begraben
werden sollte. Es kamen viele Menschen, und Jakob kam in neuen Kleidern
aus grauem Fries und strahlte förmlich; und alle wurden bewirtet, und es
war so still und feierlich. Sogar der Schulmeister kam in eigener Person
und sang so schön, während Lars Svehaugen und drei andre die Mutter zur
Tür hinaustrugen und auf einen Schlitten setzten. Darauf zogen sie
langsam von dannen, die Anhöhe hinab, der Schlitten fuhr zuerst, und
alle die andern schritten still hinterdrein. Unten aber standen zwei
Pferde, und sie und Jakob durften wahrhaftig neben Kjersti Hoël selber
im Schlitten sitzen und fahren.
Dann kamen sie zu der weißen Kirche; die Glocken läuteten so schön oben
im Turm in dem Augenblick, als sie die Mutter durch die große Pforte
hineintrugen.
Das weitere sah sie nicht mehr ganz deutlich; aber dessen entsann sie
sich noch, wie sie die Mutter in die Erde hinabsenkten und grüne
Heidekränze über sie streuten; darauf sang der Schulmeister wieder, und
alle Mannsleute nahmen die Hüte ab und hielten sie lange vors Gesicht.
Darauf gingen sie fort und fuhren wieder im Schlitten; aber diesmal
fuhren sie viel schneller; es war, als liefen die Zaunpfähle in der
verkehrten Richtung mit einander um die Wette, und sie und Jakob
versuchten, sie zu zählen, aber es ging nicht.
Und alle kamen wieder mit heim, Kjersti Hoël auch. Daheim hatte Kari
Svehaugen, die nicht mit zur Kirche gegangen war, den Tisch mit einem
weißen Tischtuch gedeckt und Teller und gutes Essen aufgetragen; und
alle aßen und unterhielten sich, aber niemand sprach laut. Nach dem
Essen nahm Sidsel Jakob mit in den Kuhstall und zeigte ihm Krummhorn. Oh
ja, er mußte schon zugeben, es war eine ganz schöne Ziege; aber eklig
war die sicher, das konnte er an ihren Augen sehen. Sie waren auch am
Bache, um nach seiner Mühle zu sehen, aber die war verfallen, seitdem er
so lange nicht hier gewesen war.
Dann wurden sie ins Haus gerufen und alle tranken Kaffee, und als sie
damit fertig waren, begann Kari alles in Körbe einzupacken.
Als das getan war, sagte Kjersti Hoël:
Ja, nun sind wir wohl hier fertig. Du, Sidsel kannst Krummhorn an die
Leine nehmen und mit mir gehen. Das war das letzte, was ich deiner
Mutter versprochen habe.
So war es zugegangen, daß Sidsel Langröckchen zusammen mit Kjersti Hoël,
Bär und Krummhorn bis zu dem Gatter gekommen war, und da geschah es, daß
sie zurückblickte und dann zu weinen anfing.
Dort sah sie Kari Svehaugen einen großen Korb am Arme tragend und Bliros
an der Leine nach sich ziehend auf dem einen Wege, und weiter weg auf
dem andern sah sie den Rücken von Jakob, dem sie eben die Hand gegeben
und Lebewohl gesagt hatte -- er sah so merkwürdig klein und armselig aus
der Jakob -- und dort brachte Lars Svehaugen einen Tannenzweig an der
Türklinke an zum Zeichen dafür, daß Schloß Guckaus nun leer stand,
verschlossen und verriegelt.
Wenn das Vieh auf die Weide gelassen wird.
Sidsel Langröckchen erwachte in der kleinen Gangkammer, die unter der
großen Treppe draußen auf dem Flur in Hoël eingebaut war. Sie schlug die
Augen mit einem Mal weit auf und versuchte, sich zurechtzufinden. Sie
fühlte ein wohliges, erwartungsvolles Erbeben im ganzen Körper, fühlte,
daß sie zu etwas Großem, Wichtigem, etwas Neuem erwacht war, auf das sie
sich ganz unvernünftig gefreut hatte; aber sie konnte nicht sofort
darauf kommen, was es war.
Es war ganz hell in der kleinen Kammer, in der bloß ein Bett und ein
Stuhl standen und sonst nur noch ein kleines Wandbrett hing mit einem
Spiegel darüber.
Die Sonne schien quer in die Stube herein durch ein paar
Fensterscheiben, die hoch oben in der Wand gerade über ihrem Bett
angebracht waren, und zeichnete die Scheiben als zwei leuchtende gelbe
Vierecke auf der Diele bei dem kleinen Ofen ab; die eine Ecke reichte
weit bis zum Ofen hinauf. Sie folgte den Sonnenstrahlen mit den Augen,
da traf die eine Ecke gerade auf etwas Hellgrünes, und gleichzeitig
schlug ihr ein wunderlich feiner Duft entgegen. Sie sog den Duft ein --
ja richtig -- nun besann sie sich, es waren die feinen Birkenzweige, mit
denen sie gestern ihr Kämmerchen geputzt hatte; draußen war keimender,
sprossender Frühling, und heute sollte das Vieh auf die Weide gelassen
werden, und die Kälber sollten Namen kriegen; heute sollte sie erst im
Ernst ihren Dienst antreten, etwas für sich selbst werden, Hirtin auf
Hoël.
Sie war nun schon einen ganzen Monat auf Hoël.
Aber bisher war sie gewissermaßen bloß zum Staate herumgegangen, hatte
im Hause mit Kjersti herumgebastelt, Kleinholz für sie geholt, den
Kaffee gemahlen und mit ihr geplaudert.
Die Schafe und Ziegen waren zwar bereits ins Freie gelassen, aber die
durften noch überall hin, bloß in den Garten durften sie nicht hinein;
aber den bewachte Bär. Im Kuhstall war auch nichts für sie zu tun; dort
war außer der Sennerin noch die Stallmagd, und die zwei besorgten alle
Arbeit. Eigentlich sollte eine Hirtin ja freilich melken können; aber
sie meinten, Sidsel solle damit noch ein Jahr warten; sie habe noch zu
kleine Hände, um Kühe zu melken. Und gar oft saß sie und maß ihre Hand
und zog an den Fingern und fragte die Sennerin, ob sie nicht ihre Hände
schon sehr groß fände; die Sennerin aber hatte gewiß schlechte Augen,
denn sie konnte das gar nicht finden.
Krummhorn hätte sie ja eigentlich selber warten sollen, das meinte auch
Kjersti, aber daraus wurde auch nichts. Denn die Ziege war so ganz
unlenksam geworden, daß sie mitunter meinten, sie wäre geradezu
verrückt. Im Ziegenstall ging sie von der einen Wand zur andern, sprang
auf die andern Ziegen und die Schafe ein, daß es bloß so in deren
Hinterbeinen krachte -- zu guterletzt mußten sie Krummhorn an der Wand
festbinden und auch dann noch die Leine ganz kurz machen. Und im Stall
wollte sie sich überhaupt nicht melken lassen. Als Sidsel es das erste
Mal versuchte, machte die Ziege einen mächtigen Satz und schlug so
heftig mit den Hinterbeinen aus, daß Sidsel nach der einen und der
Melkeimer nach der andern Seite rollten. Daraufhin mußte die Sennerin
selber die Ziege melken; aber auch da konnte es bloß mit Anwendung von
Gewalt geschehen, und ein Zweites mußte Krummhorn an den Hörnern
festhalten.
Und kam sie vollends ins Freie, so war sie nicht zu bewegen, den andern
Ziegen auf den Anger hinauf zu folgen, um Futter zu suchen, frech
stellte sie sich an der Tür zum Kuhstall auf, und hier stand sie
unbeweglich den ganzen, geschlagnen Tag -- und brüllen tat sie, wie eine
Kuh, sagte der Knecht -- so daß sie am Abend, wenn die andern satt und
vollgefressen heimkehrten, mager und hungrig wie ein Wolf war.
Sidsel meinte zwar, wenn sie einen Stand im Kuhstall kriegte, so würde
sie schon wieder vernünftig werden; aber dazu sagten Kjersti wie die
Sennerin nein -- eine Ziege dürfe nicht solche schlechte Angewohnheit
gelehrt bekommen.
Sidsel hatte deshalb nicht weiter viel zu tun gehabt; das Einzige, wozu
Kjersti sie angestellt hatte, war, ihr Kämmerchen hübsch in Ordnung zu
halten, und das hatte sie auch immer getan. Jeden Morgen machte sie
selbst ihr Bett, und jeden Sonnabend scheuerte sie den Fußboden und das
Wandbrett und streute Wachholder. Und letzten Sonnabend war denn auch
Kjersti gekommen, hatte zu ihr hereingeguckt und gesagt, sie hielte ihre
Schlafkammer ordentlicher und sauberer als die erwachsnen Mägde; und das
war nicht gelogen, das hatte sie selber gesehen.
Nun sollte es aber anders werden. Gestern abend war Kjersti zu ihr
gekommen und hatte gesagt, heute früh sollte das Vieh auf die Weide
gelassen werden, und da müsse sie mit dabei sein; späterhin am Tage
sollten die Kälber zum ersten Mal ins Freie kommen, und die müsse sie
wenigstens den ersten halben Tag hüten, und weiterhin solle sie ihnen
Namen geben, Namen, die sie auch für später behalten sollten, bis sie
große, alte Kühe würden. Am nächsten Tage dann sollte sie den Ranzen
aufgeschnallt kriegen und mit den Schafen und Ziegen in den Wald ziehen.
Denn nun ging es nicht länger an, die Tiere noch auf dem Anger grasen zu
lassen.
Jetzt besann sie sich auch; diese Namen waren es gewesen, über die sie
gestern abend im Bett nachgedacht hatte; aber noch war sie damit nicht
weiter gekommen, als darüber nachzudenken, ob nicht die feine rotbraune,
die mit dem großen, weißen Fleck am Kopfe und mit den sanften,
gutmütigen Augen, Bliros heißen sollte.
Aber sie hatte den Gedanken bald aufgegeben. Es war doch nur eine
einzige Kuh, die Bliros heißen konnte. Ach, sie mochte am liebsten gar
nicht daran denken. Und darüber war sie eingeschlummert.
Wenn sie es nur nicht verschliefe! Denn sie hatte Kjersti sagen hören,
sie könne es nicht ausstehen, wenn die Mägde am Morgen so lange liegen
blieben und die Zeit vertrödelten -- und es wäre ja auch keine Art
gewesen, wenn sie gerade heute, wo sie im vollen Ernst den Dienst
beginnen sollte, nicht ebenso früh zur Stelle gewesen wäre wie die
andern.
Sie kam rasch aus den Federn und schlüpfte in ihren langen Rock. Dann
machte sie schnell ihr Bett, öffnete die Tür, ging in den Flur und auf
die Treppe hinaus.
Die Sonne war eben im Osten über den obersten Tannenwipfeln auf der
Halde emporgekommen und brauste nun wie ein schäumender Wasserfall über
die Talränder nieder; die Sonnenstrahlen zitterten im Tau auf den Wiesen
und Halden; es blinkte im Gelben, es glitzerte im Grünen, es blitzte in
den Bächen, die talabwärts rauschten. Aus jedem Gebüsch kam ein lustiges
Zwitschern und Piepsen, ein unaufhörliches Schwätzen und Flügelschlagen,
von allerorten kam die frohe Kunde keimenden Lebens und Treibens.
Alles vermischte sich zu einem einzigen, mächtigen Morgenbrausen, in dem
der einzelne Laut verschwand, nur der Kuckuck rief hoch oben im
Birkenwäldchen auf der Halde so laut, daß man ihn über alles hinweg
hörte, und in jedem blanken Fenster stand ein großes, ruhiges
Sonnenauge.
Und wie es Tausenderlei verschiedene Arten Laute gab, so gab es tausend
verschiedene Düfte, von der dampfenden Erde, von sprossendem Gras, von
Knospen und Blüten, und durch das Ganze drang -- wie der Ruf des
Kuckucks in dem großen Gebrause -- der feine, scharfe, betäubende Brodem
des eben aufgesprungenen Birkenlaubs.
Sidsel Langröckchen blieb eine Weile stehen, holte tief Atem und ließ
den Duft und das Brausen auf sich eindringen. Dann sah sie sich auf dem
Hofe um. Es war noch ganz still, alle Türen waren noch geschlossen; von
lebenden Wesen, die zum Hof gehörten, war nur Bär zu sehen, der sich
langsam von den Steinfliesen erhob, wo er sichs in der Sonne bequem
gemacht hatte; er kam heran, sah zu ihr auf und wedelte mit dem
Schwanze.
Ja wahrhaftig, sie war heute die Erste, die auf dem Hofe auf war!
Nun, da mußte sie eben warten. Sie setzte sich auf die Treppe.
Aber nein, das hätte sie sich doch denken können -- natürlich war
Kjersti schon auf; sie hörte sie aus ihrer Kammer in die Küche gehen und
mit dem Stecken dreimal an die Decke zur Südkammer pochen, in der die
andern Mägde schliefen.
Gleich darauf hörte sie plumps, plumps, wie eine nach der andern aus dem
Bette sprang, und das Klappern der Holzschuhe, die sie anzogen.
Dann kam Kjersti heraus -- sie wollte nach der Knechtekammer hinüber, um
die Burschen zu wecken.
Als sie Sidsel sah, sagte sie:
Nein, da ist ja Sidsel schon auf den Beinen. Du bist mir ein flinkes
Mädel, ich meine, ich muß dich zur Großmagd machen.
Sidsel wurde auf einmal so verlegen, daß sie sich gar nicht getraute,
Kjersti in die Augen zu sehen. Als aber endlich die Sennerin und die
andern Mägde die Treppe herabkamen, hob sie unwillkürlich ihr
Stumpfnäschen noch ein bißchen höher als sonst.
Bald herrschte überall auf dem Hofe emsiges Leben und Treiben; aber es
war doch nicht wie gewöhnlich. Jedes hatte heute Eile, und es war, als
ob alles die Richtung auf den Kuhstall hin nähme; die Türen standen weit
offen an beiden Seiten des Stalles, und alle nahmen ihren Weg durch den
Stall hindurch. Die Frühlingsluft strömte ungehindert hinein, und die
Kühe drehten sich in ihren Ständen um, bliesen die Nüstern auf und
schauten hinaus.
Als Kjersti selber hineinging, mit den Kühen redete und der Schellenkuh
die Backen klopfte, während die Mägde dasaßen und molken, da begriffen
auch die Tiere sofort, was für ein Tag heute war. Die Schellenkuh hob
den Kopf und brüllte, daß es weit hinausschallte, und das war für alle
andern das Zeichen; sie rissen an den Ketten, schlugen mit den Schwänzen
und begannen ebenfalls zu brüllen, eine nach der andern, die ganze Reihe
abwärts, so daß der Stall förmlich erbebte, ein vielstimmiger,
erwartungsvoller Jubelruf, der gar kein Ende nehmen wollte.
Und über das Ganze hinweg hörte man den Bullen, der so tief, gleichmäßig
und gutmütig brüllte -- er brauchte sich gar nicht anzustrengen, um
gehört zu werden.
Obwohl heute alles rascher vor sich ging als sonst, schien es Sidsel
Langröckchen doch, als dauerte es lange. Sie konnte nicht begreifen, wo
die andern die Ruhe hernahmen, dazusitzen und gelassen ihr Frühstück zu
verzehren. Sie war lange vor den andern fertig und fragte, ob sie nicht
das Kleinvieh herauslassen dürfe, die Schafe und die Ziegen. Das dürfe
sie schon, wurde ihr geantwortet. Im Handumdrehen hatte sie die Tiere
ins Freie gebracht, und wie gewöhnlich zerstreuten sie sich rasch mit
mutwilligen Sprüngen und langen Sätzen über die Wiesen hin -- nur
Krummhorn nahm die Gelegenheit wahr und schlüpfte durch die offne Tür in
den Kuhstall hinein. Aber Sidsel hatte keine Zeit, das zu beachten.
Auf einmal wurde es einen Augenblick ganz still; man hörte ein paar
tiefe, volltönende Schläge einer groben Schelle. Aber es war nur ein
Augenblick; dann antwortete vom Kuhstall her ein Jubelgebrüll, Brummen,
Schnauben, Schnieben und Kettenklirren, als ginge ein schweres Gewitter
über den Hof nieder. Jetzt verstanden die Tiere, daß es wirklich Ernst
war, als sie die Schelle hörten, die sie, seitdem sie im Herbst in den
Stall gekommen waren, nicht wieder gehört hatten.
Und da kamen sie in feierlichem Zuge, Kjersti selbst an der Spitze, die
Schelle mit dem eisenbeschlagenen Kloben in der Hand, hinter ihr die
Sennerin, dann die Untersennerin, die Stallmagd und darauf die beiden
Knechte, die dicke Knüppel austeilten, -- auch Sidsel bekam einen -- und
zu allerletzt Bär, der heute auch mit dabei war.
Sie gingen in den Stall hinein. Da wurde es mit einem Mal wieder still;
alle Kühe drehten die Köpfe nach der Seite, von wo der Zug hereinkam,
und sahen mit großen, erwartungsvollen Augen drein.
Dann wurde das Vieh verteilt. Die Sennerin sollte die Ketten lösen.
Sidsel, die Untersennerin und die Stallmagd sollten es mit ihrem Stecken
durch die Tür hinausleiten; draußen im Viehgatter sollten die Knechte
bereitstehen, um die Tiere in Empfang zu nehmen und auf den rechten Weg
zu bringen -- das Vieh sollte heute auf den Nordanger -- und diejenigen,
die zusammengerieten, trennen, und draußen wollten Kjersti und Bär
stehen und sich das Schauspiel durch das Gatter ansehen.
Der große Augenblick war gekommen.
Kjersti ging zur Schellenkuh in den Stand hinein. Die richtete sich auf,
hob stolz den Kopf, so hoch sie vermochte, und stand bumsstille, wie
eine Mauer. Sie wußte genau, daß sie die vornehmste hier war, die als
erste durch die Stalltür aus- und eingehen durfte; sie mußte aber auch
zeigen, daß sie die Ehre wohl zu würdigen verstand, von Kjersti selbst
das Ehren- und Machtzeichen, die Schelle, an- und abgeschnallt zu
bekommen. Kjersti band ihr die Schelle um den Hals und löste ihr die
Kette, die klirrend zu Boden fiel. Da schwenkte die Kuh langsam und
bedächtig, wie ein großes, schweres Schiff, aus dem Stande heraus;
feierlich und ernst nahm sie die Richtung auf die Tür zu, den Kopf hoch
haltend und so ruhig, daß man kaum die Hörner sich bewegen sah, und die
Schelle gab bloß einen kurzen, bestimmten Ton bei jedem Schritte.
Der nächste war der Bulle; dem löste die Sennerin die Kette; der ging
ebenso ruhig und schwerfällig, und seine Hörner ragten so hoch, daß sie
beinahe das Dachgebälk streiften, und waren so breit, daß es aussah, als
füllten sie den ganzen Mittelgang aus. Sidsel hatte noch nie bemerkt,
daß er so groß war. Und dann kamen der Reihe nach die andern, Brandros
und Morlik, Kranslin und Reindrople, Svartsi und Drive, Farskol und
Litago, Sommerlöv und Spasergang, Mörkei und Guldros, die ganze, lange
Reihe abwärts bis zu den Färsen, deren Namen keines richtig behalten
konnte, und die jungen Ochsen, die überhaupt keine Namen hatten. Und je
weiter sie den Gang hinunterkamen, um so schneller ging es; sie
streckten die Hälse und zerrten an den Ketten, sie stürzten auf die
Kniee, wenn die Kloben an den Ketten nachgaben, sprangen wieder auf, daß
es in den Gelenken krachte, liefen geradeswegs gegen die Wand oder oben
in den Futtergang hinauf, scharten sich dann alle bei der Tür zusammen,
kamen zwei und zwei nebeneinander her, liefen sich so fest, daß ihre
dicken Bäuche wackelten, und bereits kamen neue von hinten nach und
drängten vorwärts, schlugen mit den Hörnern, stießen und brüllten;
plötzlich gab dann der Widerstand vorn nach, und der ganze Klumpen
stürzte ins Freie.
Das Letzte, was Sidsel sah, war Krummhorn, die hinten ausschlug und mit
einem langen Satz durch die Stalltür den andern nachsetzte.
Draußen war Lärm und Leben. Sie hoben die Köpfe, schnauften nach der
Halde hinauf, und dann wurden sie wie besessen; alte, steifbeinige Kühe
schlugen übermütig wie die Kälber mit den Hinterbeinen aus, machten
mutwillige Sätze über den Hof hin, gerieten in ihrer Ausgelassenheit
aneinander, daß die Hörner nur so krachten, stießen ein kurzes, wildes
Gebrüll aus, wenn sie den kürzeren zogen, und fuhren auf eine zweite und
dritte los -- das Ganze ward ein einziger großer Wirrwarr von Schnaufen
und Brüllen, Krachen der Hörner und Knacken der Gartenzäune,
Aufklatschen und Knallen der Stecken, Rufen und Schreien von
Menschenstimmen; und durch den Wirrwarr hindurch bahnte sich der Bulle,
auf und abschreitend, die Hörner hoch über dem Ganzen, den Weg wie ein
gewaltiger Schneepflug.
Nur die Schellenkuh stand ruhig ein Stück abseits und sah zu; ihr wagte
keines zu nahe zu kommen.
Endlich war die Sennerin an die Spitze des Zugs gekommen und begann zu
locken; da hob die Schellenkuh den Kopf, brüllte, daß es weit über den
Hof schallte, und sprang hinterdrein. Ihr nach kam Brandros, die immer
noch voller Wut schnaubte; nun hatte sie alle gezüchtigt, die es
überhaupt der Mühe wert waren, und hatte sie auch nicht die Schelle
bekommen, wollte sie doch wenigstens die nächste nach der Schellenkuh
sein. Ihr wieder dicht auf den Fersen kam Krummhorn angesetzt, den Kopf
hoch und mit wichtiger Miene; aber Brandros verstand heute keinen Spaß,
schlug mit dem einen Hinterbeine aus und traf sie so mitten auf den
Kopf, daß es Krummhorn vor den Augen flimmerte. Aber die Ziege
schüttelte bloß den harten Schädel -- tat, als wenn gar nichts geschehen
wäre -- das war wohl so Sitte unter Kühen.
