Make module presets independent from masking options

When using #7255, one has to draw the masks before applying the blur/pixelation, otherwise, the features to blur disappear in the image. To make it easier, I have done presets for the pixel sizes. But if I apply them after the masks have been set, I lose the masking parameters.

I would like an option to include or exclude masks from the saved parameters when I create presets in a module, such that masks are overwritten or kept as-is when the presets are applied.
Ultimately, I would like to apply module presets that don't affect masking parameters as well.

Hmmm... That's actually a great idea! There are couple interactions with presets in modules to think about so we can gather what would be the best workflow.

Internally a preset is set of all the module settings and all the blending options. This makes sense for most of the modules, but some things like eg contrast equalizer, denoising modules or the module in #7255 would be great candidates for separate masking.

With separate masking I see 2 classes of presets: module settings + blending and just module settings. I see no use for "just blending" with "whatever" module settings.

Currently the notion of "active preset" has meaning: current settings and masking match 1:1 with preset, therefore preset is active. With separate masking we'd have to think how to define "active preset"? This is important because of 2 things: current preset is highlighted in presets menu and actions like updating/deleting/editing "current preset". For most things this shouldn't be a problem unless there's a preset that has same exact module settings, but one is with blending and other is without...

And one last "problem" (but just in conceptual sense) is how best to differentiate between preset with no blending settins and one with ones that explicitly have disabled masking (so apply globally)

I too like this idea. Another use case is if you want to blend color calibration effects in either shadows or highlights. Eg. You have a high dynamic range landscape and want to raise brightness of grass (green) in the shadows, but there is already some very bright tree leaves (green) in direct sun you don't want to touch. So you mask g (or J) for the shadows only. In the same picture you wanted to darken the sky (blue), but there is water (blue) in shadow under the trees that you don't want to touch. So you mask g (or J) for highlights only. With two different masks, we need two different instances of color calibration - one for the shadows and one for the highlights. If we were able to have separate presets for module and masks, then it would be a simple one click to apply a preset 'shadows' mask, or a preset 'highlights' mask.

This also is the top feature I would like to see in DT. I'm big into fast workflow and automation whenever possible, and I find it very tedious to have to recreate my masks for image sets.

Some further ideas beyond just giving the option to store preset with or without mask:

• Give option to store styles with or without mask for each module (this could be an "include mask" column).
• Leverage the mask manager module as another option. Give filter option in mask manager to show masks from other images. Currently you only see masks from the current image, and it's impossible to use it to apply masks to other images.
